Majid Al-Hijam has been in Lincoln since 1998. Before that, he spent seven years in a Saudi prison camp. He says he misses his family back in Iraq, but Lincoln is home to him as well, now.

“Today we are donating blood for our community, for people that need blood,” he said at Saturday’s blood drive. “We did that last year, and we would be willing to do it again and again.”

This is the second year the Nebraska Islamic Foundation has hosted a blood drive, held on the culmination of Ashura, a date when Muslims traditionally give back.

“So we are here to show people that we are good citizens, we care about the community, we like Lincoln; we give everything for our society, even our blood, said coordinator Maysoon Shaheen said.

She says she first came up with this idea last year in response to a growing negative view of Islam. She and those giving today want to show that not only do they consider Lincoln home, but they want to give to make it a better place.

“They are active, they are good citizens, but not a lot of people know us,” she said. “We need to be known in the community as a part of the community.”

Fifty-five people were officially registered to give, but Maysoon says she expects many more. She says she hopes this will motivate other people in the area to serve as well.
